Minière’s 2018 Franc de Pieds is brilliant, shattering the glass ceiling typically imposed upon the vintage. Sourced from ungrafted vines planted between 1962 and 1974 on the sandy hillsides of Hermonville—which helps to explain why the vines have been spared by phylloxera—it is a blend of 75% Pinot Meunier and 25% Chardonnay, including a proportion of muscaté Chardonnay selections. Disgorged in March 2025 without dosage, it blossoms in the glass with a deep bouquet of fresh apricot, succulent fig, orange oil and iris mingled with notes of kumquat and brioche. Full-bodied and possessed of uncommon concentration for the vintage, it is muscular and enveloping, with a textural attack, a layered core of fruit and ripe yet racy acidity that carries through to a long, intensely sapid finish. Despite its depth and power, it retains all the requisite energy and incisiveness, making it one of the most compelling wines in the cellar. Drink from 2027 - 2037
